Products

Create and manage products in a seller's catalog.

A product holds what buyers see: title, description, images, category, and the options it comes in, such as Color or Size. Each variant is one purchasable version of the product, such as Red / Small, and that is where its price and inventory are set. A product with no options still has one variant.

Creating a product does not put it on sale. Whatnot creates the variants for you, with no price or inventory, so a new product is sellable only after you complete these steps in order:

  1. Create the product with POST /products. One variant is created for every combination of its option values.
  2. Get its variants with GET /products/{product_id}/variants to get their ids.
  3. Set each variant's price for the format you will sell it in (pricing.buy_it_now.price or pricing.auction.start_price) with PATCH /products/{product_id}/variants, and its inventory with POST /inventory/set.
  4. Put the product on sale with POST /merchandising/products/{product_id}. Set transaction_type to buy_it_now or auction, and use shows to add it to shows. A buy-it-now product is sold on your profile shop unless reserve_for_live is true; auctions are always reserved for live. Every variant must be priced for that format and at least one must have inventory.

A product with no options follows the same steps. Its single variant appears in GET /products/{product_id}/variants, and that is where you price it and set its inventory. Adding options or option values later creates new variants that also start without a price or inventory. Set their price and inventory the same way.
